Raw Vegan Tuna Salad
As a young girl my mom would often make me tuna salad. It was always kind of a comfort meal to me. That was the inspiration for this recipe. This raw vegan tuna salad is great on top of a bed of greens or even wrapped in romaine or cabbage with tomatoes and arugula. I love it because it is refreshing and at the same time adds a heartiness to the meal. And if you find yourself craving the fishy flavor than the dulse flakes really add the tuna salad flavor. Let’s save a tuna and eat this incredibly tasty dish instead! 🙂
Dulse is a sea vegetable and is a great source of Iodine, which is essential for proper thyroid function. You can buy it at WholeFoods or any health store. You can use dulse flakes in salads or any recipe to substitute salt. It does have a fishy flavor so keep that in mind.
When I would eat tuna (on the SAD) I loved eating it with something sweet. I loved the sweet and salty mix. So for this recipe I added apples, along with the dulse flakes and celery which is quite salty. It gives it a nice contrasting flavor and a nice crunch to it.
This is great to pack as a lunch for your kids at school or for you at work, it’s super easy to take along. There is no excuse not to always be eating healthy! 🙂 Oh and it literally takes less than 10 minutes to make!
FYI…Originally the recipe I originally created called for two cups sunflower seeds, but to cut down on the fat I substituted the second cup with carrots which also gives it a nice refreshing mildly sweet flavor. So the above pictures do not reflect the addition of carrots.

So I didn’t find dulse flakes .. Found dulse but it seems to be in large raw form.. Think this will still work for tuna recipe?.. Or should I do something to the dulse before I use it in this recipe?
Hi Heather, yes it does come also in that form too. Perhaps you can grind it into flakes, or very finely chop it up. You just don’t want to use too much and over power the taste. But, it is the same thing just in different forms. 🙂
This recipe was dinner tonight and awesome! I used dulse flakes~ thankfully we already eat them regularly, so I had some on hand. We spread the “tuna” on dried seaweed sheets, added avocado slices and rolled it up for sushi. Reminds us of our 3 years in Japan, where we ate lots of sushi. This was perfect, TY!
Oh my goodness I love it, what a great idea! I’m going to have to try that. 🙂
I’m missing something. The consistency was dry and crumbly and wouldn’t hold together. I’m going to try to process it more in the food processor. My husband like it mixed with vegan Mayo and made sandwiches.
Hi Rhonda,
I’m so glad you asked this, because as I looked back at the recipe I realised it was missing the Mayo which is an important part in holding it together and making it creamy! I’m adding that in right now to the post and here’s the link for that https://justglowingwithhealth.com/raw-vegan-oil-free-mayo/ I’d love to hear how you you like it once you add that! Just add a couple tablespoons at a time for desired texture.
Hi there! I wanted to try this but was wondering about the onion & celery.. Would these be diced finely separately or should they also just be thrown into the food processor before going in the bowl?? Would love to try this out but have limited free time so trying to make sure I don’t bodge it ☺️
Hi Stuart, that’s a great question! It really depends on the texture you’re looking for. If you put it all together it’s going to be quite minced. If you’d like more texture then I’d blend first the rest of the ingredients together well and then add the celery and onion pulse blending it so it keeps chunky (which is actually my preferred because I enjoy the added crunch). I’d love to hear how you enjoy it!
