This time of the year food seems to be as enticing as ever. So many fall spices, desserts and foods to choose from. People are spending more time in their kitchen preparing decadent meals. So how can you be health conscious and enjoy the most out of your meals? Here are three simple tips for eating healthy:
1) Always buy organic when possible. Why? Organic food does not contain toxins, pesticides, chemicals or GMO’s. It is natural, wholesome food. Plus, it supports small farmers and it’s better for the environment. Buying organic meat and dairy is important too. There is no growth hormones or drugs used on organic animals, and their feeding does not have chemicals in it either. The product is of higher quality and tastes much better too. Here is a list, created by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), of less contaminated non-organic fruits and vegetables, and those for which it is recommended to buy organic.
2) Always opt for fresh foods over canned or processed foods. Canned foods contain not only a large amounts of sodium, but the lining of the can contains a harmful chemical called Bisphenol A, also known as BPA.
3) Always use glass, ceramic, BPA free plastic containers or stainless steel containers for storing food. Once again this toxic chemical BPA, can leach into your food from food containers. Click here to learn more about safer plastic. Never microwave your food in plastic containers as the heat causes the plastic to breakdown in your food and also leaches more toxins into your food. In fact, I would not advise anyone to use a microwave if possible, if anything I recommend a convection toaster oven instead.
With these three simple tips, you can enjoy your meals and know that you prepared a great healthy meal for all of your friends and loved ones. What is your favorite healthy Fall recipe?
